How to start BJJ, and Progress from the Get Go. Firstly train at a well known Academy

Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can feel like stepping into another world — full of strange positions, new etiquette, and a lot of sweaty hugs from people you’ve just met.
But if you get your mindset right and understand what to expect, your early months can set you up for years of progress and enjoyment.
1. Finding the Right Academy and Coach
Your choice of academy will shape your BJJ journey. Here’s what to look for:
✅ A welcoming atmosphere — beginners feel included from day one
✅ A coach who teaches with structure
✅ Safety as a priority (controlled rolling, injury prevention)
✅ Values that match yours — competition, fitness, or self-defense
Feeling nervous? Bring a friend to your first class. Sharing the experience can make it much less intimidating.
2. What to Expect from Your Coach
A good coach will:
Demonstrate techniques clearly and give you time to drill
Correct mistakes without making you feel foolish
Encourage patience — BJJ is a marathon, not a sprint
Set the culture — respect, humility, and discipline
Guide your development at the right pace for you
“The best coach doesn’t just teach techniques — they teach you how to think like a grappler.”
3. How to Mix with Other Students
Your training partners are your greatest asset.
Be friendly but humble
Train with everyone (different body types = better skills)
Tap early, tap often
Help others learn, even if you’re new
Avoid the “crazy” label — control your movements
4. Equipment Checklist
Here’s what you’ll need from day one:
Gi (Kimono) — for traditional classes.
Rash Guard — under the Gi or for No-Gi.
BJJ Shorts — flexible, no zippers or pockets.
Flip-Flops — keep mats clean when off the mat.
5. How to Progress from the Start
Train 2–3 times per week minimum
Focus on fundamentals: posture, base, grips, escapes
Learn control before chasing submissions
Ask for feedback regularly
Keep a training journal after class
6. When to First Compete
Most beginners compete after 3–6 months
Your coach will know when you’re ready
Treat your first competition as experience, not a must-win
Expect nerves — even black belts get them
8-Week Beginner’s Fast Track Plan
Weeks 1–2:
Learn mat etiquette, positions, and breakfalls
Attend 2–3 classes per week
Weeks 3–4:
Drill mount and side control escapes
Try light positional sparring
Weeks 5–6:
Add basic submissions: RNC, armbar, guillotine
Learn grip fighting and posture control
Weeks 7–8:
Flow drill escapes + submissions
Try full sparring at a controlled pace
Speak with your coach about future competition

Fitness Training

Start Thinking  Fitter

BJJ is a totally different fitness to what you may be used to already.Even if you feel in great shape on the mats you will find a new fitness. You don't have to be in great shape to start.Learning BJJ will also get you fit along the way. There is nothing better than being a beginner at a new hobby or sport and seeing the results you get out of it along the way. The only thing to do is get started and enjoy the choice you've made. In reality BJJ will give you a lot more than just joining a Gym. It's well known for being great fpr the Mind and Body.
